SDL Atlas

SDL ATLAS INNOVATES COLOR FASTNESS TESTING FOR THE COSMETICS INDUSTRY

SDL Atlas is dedicated to finding solutions that help to revolutionize the way products are tested. When recently presented with a challenge by a prospective client in the cosmetics industry, SDL Atlas was able to employ one of their signature instruments in a new and exciting way.

The Senior Development Chemist in the Hair Color Lab at a major cosmetics brand had a problem. In order to test the color fastness of hair dye products she had to wash each hair sample up to 28 times which not only took several hours to do, but also was incredibly harsh on her hands and nails. She mentioned to an SDL Atlas representative that was visiting the lab to discuss color management systems that there had to be a better way.

With a bit of ingenuity, SDL Atlas was able to provide that better way. By utilizing their Rotawash Color Fastness Tester, originally designed to determine color fastness for washing or dry cleaning textiles to ISO, BSI AATCC and SDC standards, SDL Atlas successfully replicated the results of multiple hand washings on hair samples in a fraction of the time.

Using a spectrophotometer to compare samples, preliminary test results estimated that a 4 minute wash cycle in the Rotawash was equivalent to 7 hand washings. The industry standard of 28 separate hand washings could now be accomplished in 16 minutes, rather than several hours. Comparison testing by the hair color lab has confirmed results.

“This is a perfect example of the SDL Atlas commitment to providing confidence in standard based testing through expertise and global partnering. Our team was able to take an offhand request from a customer and totally revolutionized the way that their testing process is done,” said Rick Stanford, SDL Atlas General Manager. “Not only does utilizing the Rotawash dramatically increase efficiency by speeding up product testing, but it also saves wear and tear on the lab testers’ hands.”

In addition to the efficiency and dermatological benefits, the new testing system, which requires less operator involvement, also will improve the safety of lab technicians by eliminating the repetitive motions that the hand washing process required, thus reducing potential repetitive stress injuries.

The SDL Atlas Group of companies offers the largest range of textile testing equipment, supplies, consumables, and services available from a single source. With its own offices in the United States, Hong Kong and China, plus agents in over 100 countries, the SDL Atlas goal is to provide confidence in standard based testing through expertise and global partnering.
